Announcement 13th International Telemann Competition
PREFACE
The 13th International Telemann Competition is held for the two categories of period string instruments (baroque violin, viola da gamba) and chamber music ensembles. Only instrumentalists and ensembles whose primary focus is on historically informed performance practices are eligible to apply in both categories. Each instrumentalist can participate in both categories but may only be a member of one registered ensemble.
ANNOUNCEMENT FOR THE CATEGORY PERIOD STRING INSTRUMENT
(Baroque violin and viola da gamba)
COMPETITION CONDITIONS
The category period string instruments is intended for baroque violin and viola da gamba with and without basso continuo. Participants in this category must have been born on or after March 21, 1990, and before March 21, 2007. The competition is open to the public.
During the competition rounds, experienced harpsichord accompanists will be available. In the 3rd round (finale), the Leipzig Baroque Orchestra will perform as the accompanying ensemble. All participants will have the opportunity to rehearse with the accompanists.
You are welcome to bring your own harpsichordist for the first two rounds at your own expense. The name of the person accompanying must be stated when registering. In the event that your harpsichordist is unable to travel to the competition, the organizer’s accompanists will be available as substitutes. If your accompanist is unable to attend the competition, the competition office must be informed as soon as possible.
A fee of EUR 25.00 per round will be charged for the accompaniment by the organizer’s accompanist. This fee is to be paid in cash before each round.
The competition office provides all participants with rehearsal rooms free of charge. Rehearsal times as well as a warm-up phase with the accompanists immediately before the performance are guaranteed. Rehearsal and practice rooms are equipped with a tuned harpsichord.
INSTRUMENTS AND TUNING
Participants must perform on a period instrument built no later than the 18th century or a replica thereof. This also applies to bows and stringing based on historically informed performance practices. The organizers or the jury reserve the right to examine the individual instruments.
A double manual harpsichord will be provided by the organizer. The concert pitch is a1 = 415 Hertz (tempered according to Vallotti).
REPERTOIRE AND LENGTH OF PERFORMANCE
Unless otherwise specified, complete works by Georg Philipp Telemann and his contemporaries as listed in the repertoire for the category period string instruments of the 13th International Telemann Competition are to be prepared. This repertoire list is mandatory and can be downloaded here. All compositions must be performed in the original instrumentation or in alternative instrumentations as suggested by the composers.
The selected pieces for all three rounds of the competition must be submitted as part of the application documents and are considered binding.
The following time limits apply to the individual rounds of the competition:
1st round: 15 minutes
2nd round: 20 minutes
3rd round (finale): 30 minutes
The times given above include the time required to tune the instruments. The complete program to be prepared thus amounts to a maximum duration of 65 minutes.
If necessary, the selected pieces are to be performed with a shortened da capo and/or without repeats. The jury reserves the right to interrupt the performance or to skip individual movements.
The compositions chosen from the prepared pieces will be announced before the warm-up phase.

Applicants will be pre-selected based on a video recording. The video recording must be uploaded to the application platform muvac.com during the application process by January 6, 2025 (date of time stamp).
